More Korgs
Mono/Poly, Poly6, Poly-61
770 (700 and 700S are in a separate ticket)

Filled in on 2026-10-12 at Ben's asking, who filed it with the line above and no more. Everything below is from recollection, with no manual read; issue #20's list was wrong in several places for the same reason, so read the manuals first and correct this. The recommendation is Claude's and is Ben's to accept or not.

All pass the rule of 2026-10-12 (#26). Recommendation: two new instruments, and the 770 moved to #30.

  1. The Mono/Poly, by itself.
  2. The Polysix and the Poly-61, as one, by the precedent of the Jupiter-4 and the Jupiter-8: one VCO and a sub oscillator, or two DCOs, are settings of one voice.
  3. The 770 goes with the miniKORG 700 and 700S, #30, where it is now written up.

None is a setting of mini-800, mini-8000 or mini-MS. If these are taken up, each of the two wants a ticket of its own and this one closed.

The Mono/Poly, as recalled

  • Mono/Poly (1981). 44 keys, no memory.
  • Four VCOs (recalled as SSM chips), each with its own waveform (a triangle, a sawtooth, a pulse, a pulse with modulated width), octave, tuning and level; noise.
  • One filter and one amplifier for all four: a four-pole low-pass (recalled as the SSM 2044). Two ADSRs, two modulation generators.
  • Its key modes are the instrument. As one voice, all four VCOs stack on a key, with a detune. As a polyphonic instrument each key takes a VCO, up to four, all through the one filter: paraphonic, as the Poly-800 is. And a mode that shares the VCOs among the keys held.
  • "Effects": sync and cross modulation between the VCOs, in pairs or with one VCO leading the other three, with an amount that the envelope or a modulation generator can sweep.
  • An arpeggiator, a chord memory, portamento, wheels.
  • Here already: the Poly-800's two routings are this instrument's two halves, voices into one filter channel (engine/filter_channel.h); engine/analog_vco.h for sync and cross modulation worked out every sample, as the Jupiters' are; the shared unison of engine/seats.h, voices shared among the keys held, for its third mode.
  • What we would add, by the owner's first design answer for the Poly-800: a switch to a filter for each VCO.
  • Chord memory is #11.

The Polysix and the Poly-61, as recalled

  • Polysix (1981). Six voices, 61 keys, 32 memories. One VCO a voice: a sawtooth, a pulse, or a pulse whose width has an LFO of its own; a sub oscillator one or two octaves down. A four-pole low-pass (recalled as the SSM 2044), which sings. One ADSR, with the amplifier under it or under the gate. One modulation generator with a delay, to the VCO, the filter or the amplifier. An effects section of bucket-brigade lines in three modes: chorus, phase and ensemble, which is much of its sound. Unison, chord memory, an arpeggiator. No velocity.
  • Poly-61 (1982), and the Poly-61M with MIDI. Six voices of two DCOs each, with a detune and an interval; the same kind of filter and one envelope; edited by numbered parameters, the first Korg so; 64 memories; an arpeggiator; no effects. The Poly-800 followed it a year later.
  • Here already: engine/analog_vco.h and engine/sub_oscillator.h; engine/four_pole_filter.h; engine/key_assign.h; engine/effects.h's chorus for the first mode. A panel.h of the Poly-61's numbers.
  • Wanted: the phase and ensemble modes. A figure-true ensemble in engine/ is already wanted by the RS string machines (#44) and the VP-330 (#45), and stands as a placeholder on mini-JP.
  • To find out: how the Poly-61's DCOs make their waveforms, since if it is a counter and a ramp, engine/ramp_oscillator.h is nearer; and whether the two instruments' filters and envelopes are near enough to be one voice, which is the case for one instrument.
  • Their factory programs are data and are not shipped (rule 4).

Other Korgs

So that "more Korgs" has an end. Already ticketed: the PS family (#24), the DW-6000 (#38), the EX-800 (#39). Wanted eventually, by Ben's word on 2026-10-12: the Lambda, the Delta and the Trident, which are #57. Out, by his word the same day: the DSS-1, the M1 and anything else of that era.
