miniKORG 700 and 700S?
Traveler is the trick

Filled in on 2026-10-12 at Ben's asking, who filed it with the line above and no more. Everything below is from recollection, with no manual read; issue #20's list was wrong in several places for the same reason, so read the manuals first and correct this. The recommendation is Claude's and is Ben's to accept or not.

Recommendation: a new instrument, one for the miniKORG 700, the 700S and the 800DV, with the 770 (moved here from #49) to be decided on its manual. Korg's 700FS reissue does not shut it out, by the rule of 2026-10-12, which names it. It is not a setting of mini-MS: it has no patch panel, its voice and its envelope are another kind, and mini-MS is worked out a sample at a time in volts at four or five times what this should cost.

The instruments, as recalled

  • miniKORG 700 (1973). One voice, 37 keys, the controls under the front edge of the keyboard. One VCO, at footages from 64' or so to 4': a triangle, a square, a sawtooth, and two "chorus" settings that are a pulse whose width moves by itself. The Traveler: two sliders side by side, a low-pass cutoff and a high-pass cutoff, which on the hardware cannot be pushed past each other; with switches for "bright" (resonance) and "expand" (the envelope to the filter). An envelope of its own kind, set by two sliders (attack or slow, and "singing" or percussion) and switches for sustain. Vibrato, a repeat, portamento, and a "bender" that is a bend into each note.
  • miniKORG 700S (1974). The same with a second section at the left: a second VCO, a ring modulator and noise, and a few more modulation switches.
  • 800DV (1974 or 1975), the "Maxi-Korg". Two voices of the 700S's kind, an upper and a lower, played duophonically, each with its own Traveler.
  • 770 (1976). Two VCOs, a ring modulator, noise, the Traveler's two filters and an envelope nearer the usual kind, with an external input. It may be a setting of the same voice or may be nearer the MS-20, which followed it by two years; its manual will say.
  • Not asked for, of the same years: the 900PS and the M-500 Micro Preset, which are presets. If their presets are circuits they are fair game by rule 4's second paragraph, as the SH-1000's are (#43).

What is already here to build on

  • The Traveler is what the MS-20's pair of filters grew from: a high-pass and a low-pass in a row, each with its own cutoff. engine/sallen_key_filter.h is that pair as the MS-20 has it. Whether the 700's filters are that circuit is not known; the service manual's schematic would say, and what it shows may be used (rule 3).
  • engine/analog_oscillator.h for one or two oscillators a sample at a time, as the SH-5 uses it; engine/portamento.h; engine/duophonic.h for the 800DV; the MS-20's exclusive-OR ring modulator, if the 700S's is one too.

To find out and to decide

  • The envelope: what its two sliders and its switches come to. It is not an ADSR and wants an envelope of its own, or settings of engine/envelope.h.
  • Whether the two cutoffs may cross here, where the hardware's sliders stop each other. A switch, by the rule of a switch for each quirk.
  • The "chorus" waveforms: the rate and depth of the width's own movement.
  • What the reissue's manual adds (a spring reverb, memories, an arpeggiator, aftertouch and a joystick are recalled): it is where extra features come from, and Korg publishes it.
  • Whether the 770 belongs here.
  • Its name.

mini-700 is on main (7399c67): the miniKORG 700 and 700S as one instrument, and the 800DV as voice.count 2. Programs mini700, patches .m700, port 8814.

Built from the 700S owner's manual, the 700S/K-2 service manual (words, block diagram, adjustments; schematic not traced) and the 800DV owner's manual. Ben's corrections of 2026-10-14 are in: the Traveler's cutoffs cross (traveler.stops for the nubs in place), Chorus I/II are a pulse with slow/fast PWM, key priority is the shared switch, and the decay's curve follows Percussion/Singing. Ben played it on his laptop and found it seems right until he has a real one; the second VCO as a square is to be checked then.

Left open here: the 770 (manuals fetched, unread), the 700FS reissue's extras (manual not found), the 800DV's repeat mode E, and every time and depth, which are placeholders. Not run on the Pi.
