A layer's output is a tap, readable by every layer in the voice, the held voice and, through a send, another channel; a matrix value is not.
docs/modular-gaps.mdreaches a control through the tap row by rendering it on a pulse carrier and rectifying it on the far side, at the cost of a VA slot, an entry per reader and a dip at each carrier edge. The first-class form is a bus source that is any matrix source: a tap whose value is the control itself. That makes a control cross layers in a voice (#36's lanes at voice scope), cross channels on a send beside the control send #131 sketches, and strike a filter or a resonator as a trigger.
