Ben decided on the night of 2026-10-12 what becomes of the MS-50, which #25 left out: it is not an instrument of its own; the modules it has that the MS-20 lacks are added to mini-MS's patch panel. That follows the rule of 2026-10-12 (#26) that an allowed variant is where extra features come from. Not started.

Only the MS-50's specification and its VCO and VCF pages were read for #25, and its service manual was not found. Read Korg's owner's manual for it in full, and find the service manual, before building any of this; put them in docs/references.md.

The MS-50, as far as it was read

A keyboardless cabinet of separate modules with nothing wired behind its panel: a VCO, a VCF, two VCAs, an ADSR and a hold-delay-attack-release envelope, a modulation generator whose rate a voltage can move, a ring modulator, a sample and hold with a clock of its own, noise, an adding amplifier, an inverter, an integrator, a divider, a voltage supply and a meter, with pitch inputs both in hertz to the volt and in octaves to the volt.

What to add, and in what order

First, the ones that give mini-MS something it cannot do today, which has no way to turn a voltage over or add two:

  • The inverter.
  • The adding amplifier.
  • The voltage supply, a steady voltage to patch from.
  • The analogue ring modulator, a multiplier, beside the MS-20's own, which is an exclusive-OR of two pulses.

Then, if wanted: the integrator, the divider, the envelopes' several outputs, a voltage input for the modulation generator's rate, the sample and hold's own clock, and an octave-to-the-volt pitch input.

Not wanted from it: a second VCO, VCF or VCA of the same kind as the ones already there, and the meter.

How

  • Each is more jacks in instruments/ms20/jacks.h on engine/patch_panel.h. A new output goes on the end of the outputs, after EG 2 (17), so that no stored patch's cords move. The external signal processor's six outputs are also promised the end of that list (#17); whichever is built first goes first.
  • Each is at nothing with no cord in it, so a stored patch sounds as it did.
  • Add each to instruments/ms20/page.js, its outputs to kOutputs.
  • Cost. Everything in that voice is worked out a sample at a time, heard or not, and a voice takes 4.2% to 5.6% of a core of the Pi. Run minimsbench on the Pi before and after, and leave a module unworked while nothing is patched to or from it if it shows.
  • It is better done after the page shows cords well (#58).
