Octave Plateau Voyetra Eight

Filled in on 2026-10-12 at Ben's asking, who filed it with the line above and no more. Everything below is from recollection, with no manual read; issue #20's list was wrong in several places for the same reason, so read the manuals first and correct this. The recommendation is Claude's and is Ben's to accept or not.

Recommendation: not now; decide after the modulation matrix (#7). It passes the rule of 2026-10-12 (#26): made from about 1982, long out of production. But its voice, built clean, is one this tree already has several of, and what sets it apart is its modulation routing and its keyboard, which are #7 and the T8's things over again. As a new instrument today it would be mini-P5 under another name. It cannot be settings of mini-P5 either, by the way families have been drawn so far: one maker's instruments to an instrument.

The instrument, as recalled

  • Voyetra Eight (1982), by Octave-Plateau, the firm that Octave, the CAT's maker (#47), became. A rack of eight voices with a separate keyboard, the VPK-5, of five octaves with velocity and pressure and a joystick.
  • Voice. Two VCOs (recalled as Curtis chips) with sync, noise, a four-pole low-pass (recalled as the CEM 3320, the Prophet-5's), and two envelopes of the ADSR kind.
  • Modulation. Two LFOs and a great many routes, set from a small panel by pages of numbered functions, and known for being deep and hard to learn.
  • Keyboard modes. Whole, split and layered, with programs combined into "steps"; unison; a polyphonic sequencer; about a hundred programs. MIDI on later ones.

If it is built

  • engine/analog_vco.h, engine/four_pole_filter.h, zones, sounds and engine/seats.h, velocity, release velocity and each key's pressure in engine/midi.h: all here, from the Prophets and the JX.
  • A numbered panel.h, if its pages are numbers as the Poly-800's are.
  • Its sequencer goes to #56 to be mined. Its programs are data and are not shipped.

To find out and to decide

  • Whether anything in the voice is unlike a Prophet-5 Rev 3's once the manual is read: an extra envelope, a filter mode, a waveform. If so the case for it is better than this says.
  • Whether the owner wants it for its sound, which is tone and waits on measurement, or for its routing, which is #7.
  • With the CAT (#47), whether Octave's instruments would be one family: their voices are not alike, so probably not.
